Just announced: Just Gold is the Ambassador of an innovative global public arts initiative in Australia

We proudly announce that Just Gold Digital Agency is the Ambassador of Shared Studios (otherwise known as Portals) www.sharedstudios.com in Australia.

“This is a synergy we have been looking forward to; it is aligned with our vision and mission and it is an innovative way to use art to address complex social issues and create systemic change” said Just Gold CEO Kyriakos Gold.

It is a project that curates the diversity of the world.

What is a Portal?

Portals is a global public arts initiative.A portal is a golden shipping container. Right now, 40 Portals exist around the globe, connecting people in a new way. Each Portal is equipped with immersive audio and video technology inside.

When you enter one, you come face to face with someone in a distant Portal and can converse live, full body, and making eye contact, as if in the same room.Portals are placed in highly diverse environments, including schools; refugee sites; cultural centres; public parks; businesses; conferences; and events. They have been applied to dozens of contexts, from casual conversations to distance education; language immersion; policy discussions; business meetings; and live artistic and musical collaborations.

Conceived by Amar Bakshi, this global initiative creates social change by ‘rewiring’ our preconceived notions about other cultures.

“Portals began as a daydream. We’ve all read stories about people walking through a mirror, or a wardrobe, or a rabbit hole… and emerging in another world; another time; another space. So I wondered: what if you could enter a door at the back of your local coffee shop and see live into Lahore, Pakistan?” said Shared Studios Founder & Creative Director Amar Bakshi.

With the rise of the smartphone and video technology, it has become easier than ever to stay in touch with family and friends. But how are we engaging with strangers? How can we learn more about humanity?

Life is better when we engage with people unlike ourselves.

When we look up from our phones and speak with someone new, we open new possibilities of understanding. When we witness the diversity of human experience, our lives are made richer, deeper, and more profound. But connecting with someone new can be hard and connecting with someone across the world is harder. That’s why Shared studios build Portals: they are immersive spaces in which you come face to face with someone on the far side of the globe. Every Portal is staffed by a real human being, someone who facilitates dialogue, provides live language interpretation, and connects their community to the world.

What is happening around the world

Right now there is a network of 40 Portals around the world that connects these spaces to one another for dialogues, performances, and collaborative activities. Portals exist in a wide array of locations, from a tech hub in Gaza City and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Erbil, Iraq to a high school in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and a community centre in Yangon, Myanmar. Each month, Shared Studios add new sites to the growing network.

Now, Just Gold adds Australia to the network

These connection will build familiarity, empathy, and understanding between communities who would otherwise never meet. They will give people everywhere a chance to tell their own story; to explore the diversity of human experience; to connect people separated by distance and difference in encounters that are humanising and real.
